What is acid and lignin free mean?

The acid will cause your paper and photos to discolor and to deteriorate more quickly as oppose to acid free paper. During manufactoring the acid has been removed from the paper therefore, it dramatically slows down the aging process.

Lignin is an organic substance that acts as a binder for fibers in wood and certain plants and adds strength and stiffness to the cell walls. What does that have to do with paper? Well it allows your paper to turn yellow and become brittle after a few weeks (check out newspapers that have been left out for a few weeks-they turn yellow and become brittle). So, to make scrapbooking paper safe it is processed to have the lignin removed.

If you want to use newspaper clippings or other paper in your album that is not photo safe you can either photo copy it onto acid/lignin free paper or place your original articles onto photo safe paper. This will make your newspaper articles longer lasting.
